The Adventures of Jeff and Sarah
We are busy making content from our travels and plan on wrapping up our YouTube series about the trail in the near future. At some point we plan on completing our blog about the trail as well. You can find the blog here. We are also writers for the Trek.co. If you would like to get notified when new things are posted, sign up at the bottom of the page. We were also in Europe and the USA for the first 6 months of our sabbatical. If you would like to see more about that adventure, check out our Wandering Around blog.
Well, hello there! We are Jeff and Sarah, and we took a year-long travel sabbatical that took us all over the globe. In the middle of the traveling, we decided to walk a long ways and did the South Island portion (NoBo) of Te Araroa Trail in New Zealand.
Jeff and Sarah start the Te Araroa trail with a bang! Well, more like a pop. Regardless, they did start the hike. There are pictures and videos to prove it.
How to prepare physically for a thru-hike. Jeff and Sarah spend 7 weeks in the US sweating and pumping iron in an attempt to make Te Araroa a little more doable.
One stop shop for your South Island Te Araroa NoBo mapping needs. Including: overall map, daily GPX files, resupply points, and a table breakdown of each day.
Sarah and Jeff are at the midpoint of their sabbatical and will soon leave the U.S. and head to New Zealand for Te Araroa. They have closed an exciting chapter after being in Europe for the fall and since being back have spent time with loved ones and catching up on adulting. As they're preparing for the next chapter abroad, a spectrum of emotions arise as well as obvious excitement for tramping (hiking for kiwis) throughout South Island.
The end is near...
Jeff and Sarah approach the end of their Te Araroa Adventure. In this episode they explain some missing footage, do a flip-flop on the Queen Charlotte Track, sample some fine local bubbles, and take a look back on this little hike.
We hoped you enjoyed our videos! Feel free to comment any questions y'all might have. We plan on coming out with a few more videos at some point where we go into detail about our gear, planning, decisions, etc.

Jeff and Sarah prepare for the Nelson Lakes section of the Te Araroa Trail by getting some much needed RnR in Hanmer Springs. The forecast is looking ominous for them in the upcoming section, so they know time is of the essence to get over Waiau Pass. Will they make it? Will the day after day of heavy rain finally take its toll on them? Tune in to this episode to find out...
Oh, and they also take you on a tour of the nicest string of huts on the TA (Anne Hut being Jeff's favorite), and you'll get an up close view of the clearest freshwater lake in the world (Rotomairewhenua / Blue Lake).

Jeff and Sarah survived the midnight hike to Ohau and were able to wait out the storm while enjoying the greatest nachos that could possibly exist in the world and beer. They walk and hitch their way to Tekapo where their halfway-there supply box is waiting for them. Another fun storm rolls in, and it covers the highest point on Te Araroa (Stag Saddle) with snow. They make their way to Arthur's Pass where they wait out more snow and meet three more fellow NoBos (an endangered species). As they follow Harper's Pass through Lake Sumner Forest Park, they get to enjoy several more days of rain and rainbows. :)

Christmas came early for Jeff and Sarah on Te Araroa when they received their new, lightweight packs from Fiordland Packs. They soaked up the sunshine and showers in Wanaka and made their way towards Lake Hāwea. The combination of hitches and hiking allowed them to enjoy dinner in town and relish the views of Lake Hāwea which is more untouched and less touristy. Hiking from Lake Hāwea, they became well acquainted with the Breast Hill and East Ahuriri Tracks and ended this section at Lake Ohau. Along the way, they enjoyed 360 degree views on Breast Hill Track, slipped up, down, and into the Timaru River, and discovered the meaning of every rose has its thorns. The cherry on top was the 25 mi / 16 hr hike from Tin Hut to Ohau Lodge that included night hiking on poorly marked trails (even if it was during the daytime), fording through their biggest river yet (Ahuriri River), and enjoying, you guessed it, more rain. While hiking till nearly 1:00am was not the original plan, that grueling day was worth it given the storm that rolled in and how slippery and more miserable the trail conditions would have been. Last but not least, they were able to enjoy Ohau Lodge’s legendary nachos.

Jeff and Sarah start to feel more like Te Araroa hikers after they survived the maw of the Longwoods and rainy Takitimus. They cruise through the Mavora Lakes and meet an incredible family, take some time off in Queenstown (though it is not quite as restful as they hoped), checkout a golf tournament (New Zealand Open), march upstream of the Arrow River, and conquer the Motutapu Mountains that seem to be on repeat.

Jeff and Sarah get ready for the first true test of the TA, the Longwood Forest. The Longwoods live up to their name for being a rough two-day slog through dense trees and deep mud. They then zigzag through private farmland in Southland and meet Tosh, an awesome fellow NoBo hiker whom they journey with for almost the entire rest of the trek. The trio then makes their way through the Takitimu Mountains where they face fern gullies, washed out trails, 6 ft (2 m) tall tussock, and driving rain. As they exit the forest, the sky clears, and they make their way to civilization for needed R.n.R. in Te Anau.

Jeff and Sarah begin their first thru-hike in Aotearoa, a journey that they have dreamt about for years. With no gradual introduction to Te Araroa, they hiked along the coast, road, and even asked a stranger for water. They will never think of "long walks on the beach" in the same way again. While it can be a lovely stroll during low-tide, beach walking is more brutal than it appears after several miles and during high-tide. Check out the links below for more info, enjoy! Jeff and Sarah spend their time in the States to prepare for the thru-hike ahead.
Take a seat and join us back in time, eons ago, to learn about the creation of the Te Araroa trail.
In short, the trail consists of multiple existing tracks connected together with new routes on both public and private land. Collaborating since 1975, Te Araroa officially opened in 2011. Now that the trail is a teenager, it can be temperamental and change routes depending on private land disputes or trail conditions.
Unlike most childhood stars as they age, Te Araroa is only gaining popularity with time. People across the globe travel to Aotearoa to tramp “The Long Pathway,” the trail’s meaning in Māori. Starting from Cape Reinga and hiking to Bluff, the trail spans more than 3,000 kilometers (1,900 miles). The spectrum of tracks includes backcountry wilderness, beaches, paddocks (say hi to your new friends, sheep and cows), and even highways (the sections gotta connect somehow).

Jeff and Sarah journey to New Zealand for an adventure on the Te Araroa Trail. Here is a sneak peak of what to expect. Along with the mountainous landscapes and glacial lakes, there are tons of stumbles, blisters, and moments of insanity. Enjoy for what's to come :)
Although Sarah and Jeff are on a world adventure, there are parts of the journey that are not so glamorous. In addition to feeling homesick, they share what “travelin’ blues” is to them. Some may take pleasure in this and think “Ah ha, I knew quitting their jobs isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be!” That’s right my friend, there is happiness in routines!
Jeff and Sarah detour to Vienna, Austria before heading to Munich to reunite with their friends Rosa and Jon at Oktoberfest. They enjoy Viennese treats and stroll along the many winding and pretty sidewalks that Vienna has to offer. They head to Munich and spend much needed time with their friends from Houston and survive the splendid chaos of Oktoberfest. They marveled at nearby castles and palaces and found out that the “mad king” was really not all that mad and was just born at the wrong time with many enemies.
With the spicy cough behind them, Sarah and Jeff take a breath of fresh air and explore the country of Croatia. They fly into the beautiful coastal town of Dubrovnik and check out some Game of Thrones sites. They take a ferry to Split and get lost in the ancient windy streets. They then journey to Zagreb where they get a two week stay and indulge in the Croatian lifestyle!
The spicy cough attacks Jeff and Sarah! They end up in Athens much longer than anticipated and deal with unexpected issues as the days drag on…
Jeff and Sarah circle Ireland seeing as much as they can before a change of pace. They end up back in Dublin to dog sit a lovely puppy named Bruce for an awesome and generous couple for a week. They then hop over to the Greek island of Santorini and enjoy the islander (more touristy) lifestyle until things take an unfortunate turn.
We said our farewells to Scotland who we love dearly now and made the most out of our last days there. Our discouraging introduction to Dublin was remedied by a walk in the woods in Belfast, and we walked along the famous steps “created” by Finn McCool.
Tune in as two heavy weights go head-to-head in a no holds barred, knock down drag out fight! We do an in-depth analysis of the areas’ public transportation, weather, driving, scenery, dining, and pubs/bars to see who will hold the title of cool places to be in the summer of 2022.
Eating our way through Scotland with haggis, black pudding, smoked salmon, and pickled herring…. The haggis wasn’t half bad! Also celebrating a birthday, meeting lovely (hilarious) people, and hiking in the cold, wet, windy, and briefly sunny highlands.
We made it to Europe! After some jet lag recovery, we were ready to explore England.
Enjoying time in Denver before we head to London. We appreciated the rest and hikes more than we anticipated!
Leaving Texas was tougher than we thought. We are extremely lucky to have such amazing people in our lives.
This is what we have planned so far. Feel free to leave suggestions of things to do and see in the comments!
Quick overview of what we are doing and a place for you to sign up for new post notifications.
Nacho needed a new table for his bowls, and I needed a project to do to take advantage of being around family members that have shops. This was made out of maple, mahogany, and steel pipes. I cut the holes with a plunging router, sanded down to 220 grit, and used five coats of gloss poly. Nacho approves.
Computer build with custom water cooling, colored matched the coolant to my A&M jersey, mechanical keyboard, and a cement bust with a new paint job to hold the headset. Since I didn’t have a shop anymore, I had to find something to work on.
We decided our dining room table could use an upgrade to seat more people for dinner (and of course, for board games). So with limited space in the dining room, we went with a 60” diameter table with a pedestal base. The top is made out of poplar with a weathered gray finish, and the base is douglas fir painted white. It was my first real experience with making multiple circular cuts and nearly resulted in disaster, but with a little patience and some spare wood, I was able to get flush fits.
Covid isolation project. This is made out of birch and oak plywood, aluminum siding, and steel pipes. I drew up the design from scratch. The top has a 1” drop from the back to the front that gives it a nice 4 degree slope for ergonomics.
I love board games, and Settlers of Catan is definitely one of my favorites. I got inspired from seeing other people’s home made Catan boards and decided to give it a try. I started with a blank wood board that I ordered from Etsy. I then worked several iterations of designs for the different pieces on paper. Once I was satisfied, I hand drew the each design on the hexagons with pencil and burned them into the wood with a soldering iron. Sarah and I then sampled all of the wood stains we had from old projects and picked what we thought would fit each piece. Finished it with a couple of coats of gloss poly.
As most projects go, this started as a simple idea that was to use only scrap wood. As I was working on it, I got more and more ideas and it evolved into quite a beast. I ended up satisfied, but it was so heavy and impractical that it turned out to be just a stepping stone for creating the pedestal table. To add some flare to project, I burned maps of Westeros, Middle Earth, and Houston.
The hard top for our jeep was a little too heavy for just Sarah and I to lift properly. I made a pulley system that made it to where one person could remove the top by themselves. It also can hang in the garage for storage.
Another isolation project. Drew up the plans myself. Made out of Maple, Walnut, and steel pipes.
We added a projector to the man cave / yoga room, so we had to find a new lighting solution. I built new fixtures that would be out of the way enough to not get in the way of the projector. We rerouted the existing wiring for ceiling fan to go to each spot and has the ability to be controlled by individual switches.
The whole house is basically an ongoing project of slowly replacing Ikea furniture with homemade pieces. For the desk we used a slab of cherry with hairpin legs. The shelves are cherry stained pine with steel pipe supports.
This was probably my favorite simple project. I just did some trig to figure out the lengths of the 2x12s and did two cuts. Then sanded, stained, and pollied. Also I painted the steel pipes black.
This was the first project I did in our new house. Sarah was gone one weekend, and I was bored, so I decided to completely redo the bar top. Ended up pretty happy with the results.
Quick and easy build from plans I found online. I decided to get a little intricate on the paint job to make it interesting.

Fur Family
Nacho
Nacho Zanzibar Calvillo
Nacho is hands down the most expressive dog I have ever known. There isn’t a moment of the day that he won’t hesitate to let you know how he is feeling whether it be happy whines or nervous barks. He loves going on runs, chewing on bones, and scavenging for scraps. He hates horses, garbage trucks, and rule breakers. He is a Doberman-Shepard mix with very strong herding instincts and is a strong believer in keeping everyone together when we go for jogs as a family by slamming on the breaks if he is with the lead person or pulling the caboose along to close the gap. He loves attention but would rather for you to reach for him to be pet rather than him getting too close. He is a people puppy and gets extremely excited when friends come over.

Spaghetti
Louie Spaghetti Classen
Spaghetti boys, his one of many nicknames, is an addition to the family that completed the bunch. Once everyone was acclimated which took a month, it felt like Spaghetti was always part of the family. Spaghetti is a love machine who enjoys cuddles as well as exploring and finding out how high he can perch himself. He can somehow handle Nacho and his desire to constantly wrestle yet with people, it takes him time to warm up to them. Jeff likes to think that Spaghetti prefers death metal music and enjoys cuddling with Jeff during video games, especially the violent ones for some reason. I'm convinced he knows how handsome he is and doesn't have to prove himself for love. The confidence and level of self-worth of cats is equivalent to humans who have done 15+ years of therapy. I truly admire and envy that! In the mornings, Spaghetti will cuddle as long as possible, but as soon as our feet hit the floor, he knows it's game time. We like to think that he is telling us (more like yelling) how to feed him and where the food is. Our favorite Spaghetti moments are his morning and evening snuggles and watching wrestling matches between him and Nacho, he can surprisingly hold his own.

Jeff and Sarah take a look back at the trail while it is fresh on their minds.
